Our Documentary Work

Telling the Stories Mining Leaves Behind

GRRMC produces documentaries that put a human face on the communities affected by Ghana's mining, cocoa and fishing economies. One of our releases follow project-affected persons in Obuasi through resettlement process; a quiet, ongoing struggle, that rarely makes the headlines.

Compensated but Not Restored: Mining Resettlement Issues in Obuasi

Obuasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana

When mining operations expand, entire communities are sometimes relocated to make way for them. This documentary, commissioned by Centre For Social Impact Studies, follows the people of Obuasi who were resettled, and asks what compensation alone cannot restore: the social ties, cultural life and economic security that came with the land they left behind. It is a silent battle project-affected communities fight every day, largely out of public view.
